I've found the announcement I was referring to in my query to Ted. It was in MM vol 3 no 3 (1998). Gabriel Woolf needed to sell 100 copies to cover costs. The price would have been around £30, and at that time 30 people had expressed interest. The contact was Fiona Haughey.
If there is ever any similar proposal in future I would definitely be interested, and I hope that 100 takers could be rustled up. I agree that GW's abridgement is superb, and that you can't 'see the joins', but for me something goes wrong with the pacing of the stories. You get there too quickly. For me, Ransome's time sequences (often slow) were carefully arranged and a vital part of the stories.
