Tony Colwell, the former Editorial Director of Jonathan Cape, died recently after a mercifully short battle against canmcer and TARS have lost their last link with the House of Cape as AR knew it.
Tony joined Cape in 1960 from William Collins on the publicity side and during this period he scooped up a number of awards. Changing horses in midstream, he moved to Editorial and in 1984 thought there should be a children's book to mark the centenary. The result was AR and CF Trunk. This in turn led to the successful Amazon appeal and this led to TARS (This is an over-simplification, I know)
Tony remained an great enthusiast and did everything he could, in difficult times, to promote AR's work. Among his happiest memories during his last years were those when he introduced AR to his grand-children (who are now members of TARS).I did not tell him of the recent blunder when PD and PP's endpaper maps were transposed. Tony was a perfectionist and it would have upset him.
