In Picts and Martyrs, the boat builder speaking about Scarab says words to the effect "Mr Turner asked us to build her the same as yours (Amazon) as possible."
Now I have heard it mentioned somewhere that Coch y Bhonddu was the original Scarab.
It follows that if Coch y Bhonddu and Mavis are similar, then Mavis is Amazon, on the other hand if Coch y Bhondu is more like Beetle, then Beetle it is. If none of the three are similar, then that's the magic of Ransome, weaving a totally convincing tale out of thin air.
