A great co-incidence prehaps (though not impossible), but essential? Do you mean that they would have be stranded in the Netherlands but for Cmdr Walker's help? I think not - after all they did have plans of their own which were quite reasonable.
What this did do, though, was to allow the book to reach a speedy and straight-forward end. The tale is about the journey out, after all, and this centre would have been lost a little if we had to wait with them in Flushing for a few days until help arrived.
