I think it may be simply the diffrence beween usage in spoken English and written English - ie. although I invaribaly write "around" I normally say "round".

Of the examples you give, all ofthe "arounds" seem to be descriptive narrative, whereas the "rounds" are either spoken or dramatic narrative.
