I think I'm pretty-much with you about the Coot Club's fascination with rope-work, Jonathan. Knot-tying was one of my favourite pursuits in the Boy Scouts, and I still like it, even if not to the same extreme.

To your list of often-used knots, I would add pirate hitch (see thread above,) constrictor knot, and buntline hitch. Also I find I need to use a double sheet bend far more than I used to because of all the synthetic material that's around these days.
