Jon - you're right as regards US and Canada, but not the UK. Here, copyright is automatic, and you don't need the copyright sign. However, it is often used in newspapers here to prevent infringement in America.
By the way, there is a very belated obituary of Tony Colwell of Jonathan Cape in the Telegraph today (Wed), and it mentions his keenness to 'keep in print the works of Arthur Ransome'
