Peel Island was given to the National Trust by the eighth Duke of Buccleuch in 1933 (from Elizabeth Batrick's Guardian of the Lakes: a history of the National Trust in the Lake District from 1946 which I picked up as a "bargain book" for five pounds in Hawkshead some years ago.)
