Sorry this is very late news but I read this week that the first large charcoal burn for a century will be lit in Grizedale forest this weekend. I checked it out today and a "Pudding" will be assembled tomorrow (Fri 16th Feb 2001)and lit sometime in the afternoon. It will be watched over by the inhabitants of a traditional wigwam styled colliers hut for the three days of the burn.
It is around 600 meters south of Satterthwaite village, directly east of AR's old house on the shores of Coniston, in the next valley.
It offers other forest crafts esp Fri night when music & storytelling are proposed. Should be quite interesting!
