Work ? Smirk ! Yes, es-parto.lancs.ac.uk is a machine that has to work hard for its living and is not just a dedicated server [the lancs. domain is also full of bandwidth snatching, web scurfing students (soon to hurry of home for summer)].
I've just hacked together a different approach to new message monitoring which may prove a bit faster.. please give it a whirl
