Robert - it's in 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' published in 1891. The murdered man (an Australian) was heard to cry 'Cooee!' shortly before his death. From this, Holmes deduces that the person he was expecting (his murderer as it turned out) was Australian also. As Holmes explains to Watson: 'Cooee is a distinctly Australian cry, and one which is used between Australians.'
