This is my first look at the TARS board (I've just sent off my forms to join) so this seemed a good thread to follow up!

And what a difficult question it is! I obviously have a deep affection for S&A because it was the one I read first, but in fact it is one of the ones I've read least as an adult (partly because my two childhood copies both fell apart, I've just bought a new one). As a child I spent holidays either by Windermere on the Broads and so I love all the Lake District and both the broads books. But there's something about Secret Water that might just make it my favourite - it's mysterious, the children have serious business to carry out, I've never BEEN to the place and so all my images are courtesy of Mr. Ransome... Perhaps it's that.

Incidentally, as a kid I used to dream of sailing to Ramp Holme on Windermere and (until seeing compelling photographs of the harbour on Peel Island!) always believed it to be Wild Cat Island. I'd still take a lot of convincing that it wasn't an influence. I did eventually sail there and it was well worth the trip!

Cheers,

Duncan
