I must admit that as a kid, it took me a while to warm to Dick. He struck me as a bit of a nerd, as we now say in the States. He was not salty enough for me as I read the books as a child, looking for inspiration and affirmation for my own nautical aspirations. I think I rather liked Peggy, a reliable mate, but somewhat prone to lapses in concentration (very much like me--then as now). I always found Titty’s spirit admirable, too.

Now, I find the Ds to be tremendous additions to the books and appreciate them more and more. Dick's accomplishments in WH and GN, as others have pointed out, rally our support.

Of the side characters, I have always rather liked Tom, the Captain of the Titmouse. Being a nature lover from infancy, I strongly endorse his tactics to save the coots. His nautical skills and ingenuity are impressive, too.
