Alan has beaten me to the punch. I too was working towards a list of the different meanings in which FOR EVER is used.
I think that it is likely that Alan has captured the main differences and any further work on that project may not be very useful.
He does however raise a very interesting question about expressions that are tell tale signs of a particular author's work.
I wonder whether it would be worth looking in other works by AR (especially Racundra, the Russian Revolution books, and the fishing books) to see whether the use of FOR EVER is a sign of AR's authorship. If it is, I wonder why he used two words rather than "forever". If not, I wonder what it was about his later works for children that encouraged the use of the expression FOR EVER?
