Candles in the bedrooms may be an indication, but I don't think too much can be read into the use of a battery to power the bell. Most older bells do require direct current at a low voltage, so a battery would be the logical power supply. Otherwise Dick would have had to cobble up a transformer and a rectifier (not to say he couldn't have, or wouldn't have enjoyed doing so, but the object was to get the bell up and working so they could get on with the serious business. He had to run new wiring between the house and stable as well, and safely running a mains line across would also be a major project.
