As a child, when I first started reading these stories, and my under-
standings of the language differences had not yet developed, I had
visions of them carrying a stick with a wad of flamable material
around ond end, and lit with a flame to make what they called a
"TORCH". you know, like as in a "torchlight parade". But then at
that time, I had visions from newsreels of torchlight parades in
places like Germany, where they seemed to be the "in' thing...

Then I encounterd the idea of an "electric torch", and the flaming
stick somewhat had to fade as a going concept.

But then, that is part of the fascinating aspect of reading Ransome,
it is quite a learning experience.
