Ah, those good old days! (Well, in some ways.) We had the pantry with marble or stone shelf, meatsafe and open window, very good to climb in through to steal currants and sultanas. The first refrigerator arrived late 50s, probably less than half the capacity of today's models, and gas powered, if I remember right. Is that possible?

And tradesmen delivered, as noted by others. And some at least would call in to take the week's orders. I know that because I remember the grocer calling on the day King George VI died (1952), bursting into tears at the kitchen table and having to be revived with cups of tea.
