Thanks, Mike, it does. However, rest assured that the chances of an organisation fraudulently masquerading as a charity in the UK are slim, as the Charity Commission are like hawks.
Jon was right to stress the educational aspects of the Arthur Ransome Society. Among its objects are 'to promote wider readership of AR' 'to help young people widen their experience of life in the spirit of AR' and 'to educate the public generally concerning AR'. These could clearly be considered charitable objects.
Among the TARS Development Committee's latest recommendations are the setting aside of a specific sum in the TARS annual budget for books, videos etc for schools. Sounds a good idea. TARS Midland Region has been doing this, at a modest level, for some years.
Finally on the charitable theme, in the early years of TARS I seem to remember (this is from memory) that we funded sailing courses at the Horstead Centre for disadvantaged/disabled young people. I haven't heard of this in recent years - does anyone know whether TARS still does this, and if not, why not?
