Going back a little further (i.e. to mediaeval-ish times), the larder was, I think, the place where meat and fats were stored, and the pantry the place where bread was stored. Also, later, as Mike says, a place where silver etc was kept, as in butler's pantry - in this case you might expect to find a bottle of port there too :) .

My grandparents' house had a back kitchen, with a door to the outside - the tradesmen's entrance as discussed earlier - and a door into the kitchen. It contained recesses for coal and coke, brooms and household implements, and a bench for arranging flowers and sundry purposes.

Keeping things cool really wasn't an issue in Norfolk, where the east wind seemed to blow most of the time. Keeping yourself above freezing was more the point before central heating was widespread.
