We used milk cans to collect milk from the milkman who came around in his cart in the morning and evening.
The cart had two large tanks on it with taps protruding through slots in the tail gate.
The milk cans were like billy cans with a lid and were either enamelled, aluminium or later, stainless steel.
We would buy about half a gallon at a time. (2 quarts or 4 pints{20 fluid ozs}).
If we were out, my mother would leave the can in the servery which was a small cupboard with two doors, one that opened to the outside and the other into the kitchen. The milkman, the baker and the butcher would leave their products there and money would be left there for the tradesmen to collect. It was a terrible crime for someone to steal the money from serveries!
This was in Sydney in the late 40's.
