Swallow’s paint is mentioned several times in SD, indicating that she was painted not varnished?

In “Salvage” (Chapter VI, page 91 of Red Fox pb), when they get her up and turn her over, “There were a good many scratches in her paint, but ...... , no serious hurt except the gaping hole in her bows, where two planks had been stove in by the Pike Rock.”

The picture “Under Jury Rig” shows a hull with a black bottom.

In “Showing the Parrot his Feathers” (Chapter XXI, page 294), John says “Captain Flint would never have .... left a message ... if Swallow wasn’t nearly ready. Painted, I should think. And in weather as hot as this she’ll dry fast”.

When they get her back,in “Stretcher Party” (Chapter XXXIV, page 472), “They .... tenderly touched the new paint and found it dry”.

While a varnished boat can have paint trim, the references to paint seem to indicate a painted hull?

Swallow (and Amazon) are in PD and ML as well as SA of course. Any mention of paint?
