I read Swallowdale, then Peter Duck, then when the libary opened Swallows and Amazons and the rest in publishing order.
To explain, S and PD where christmas presents to myself and my brother respectivly, being an avide ready, I was about 10, I read mine first, my brothers second and the rest I borrowed form the local libary.
I think it made my enjoyment of SA greater because I was so keen to read it.
To answer you question, it doesn't matter, fiction or fantasy that is the question.
