This of course is not a direct answer to the criticism of the use of acronyms.
In defence of that, my experience is that acronyms are very useful in written discourse among people with shared interests, but that they are less useful in spoken exchanges. Most people with whom I have had exchanges about AR use the acronyms when writing and speak using the full titles (even We Didn't etc). That seems to me to be an appropriate compromise.
