The reference in PD is clearly to soccer / association football, as the ball there is explicitly described as "round", an unlikely word to use in describing a rugby ball. The reference, IIRC, to "making the fifteen" in WH is what cements that to rugby. The GN reference is certainly ambiguous, as the skin could resemble either a rugby football due to the oblate shape when deflated or to a soccer football due to the black and white markings.
