John was right under the Collision Rules; but was wrong under the Racing Rules. They were in fact racing, but since he and Nancy had not signed a declaration that they agreed to be bound by the Yacht Racing Association (as it then was, it is now the Royal Yachting Association) Rules, the Collision Rules would apply, he was right. This is very pedantic of me; I actually doubt if AR, not a racing man, would have known the racing rules! And we need not expect John to have known the racing rules although since his parents had raced together before he was born he might have done.
