A couple of years ago now, my daughter and I went looking for the Dogs' Home which was located by some TARS in a Forestry commission wood on the east side of Coniston, just north of The Heald, Ransome's house in the latter stages of the war. The one room structure which looks very like Ransome's drawings can be found by following the marked path. To me it seemed to be bigger and the roof higher than I imagined and it is a bit more tucked in among the trees but it certainly matches the description very closely.
It is very dark inside the hut and hard to see the details without some illumination, but there is a fireplace etc. It also seems in a little better repair than Ransome describes it.
