I have been rereading Tony Colwell's talk in the Proceedings of the 1995 Literary Weekend. He quotes a 1933 letter from Arthur Ransome to Wren Howard, saying, "Pictures. You can count on 20 full-pagers, as in P.D., ..."
So I think we have authority for our slovenly habits.
