I found the staysail on my cutter to be a nuisance while cruising the protected waters of Puget Sound, Strait of Georgia, and Strait of Juan de Fuca here on the west coast. It wasn't rigged with roller furling, the boom took up space on the foredeck, and bounced around dangerously when raising / lowering the staysail. So, I took it, including the staysail headstay off completely. The boat sailed just as well with the main and genoa which was controlled by roller furling, and was easier to tack. The ribald neighbors in my marina soon came up with a name for this, "Its half sloop and half cutter. Here somes Dan in his slutter."
