If Ransome had only been writing about sailing, then perhaps a Laser would have been a reasonable modern equivalent, but the Swallow, Amazon and Scarab were moire than just fun sailing boats, they were expedition ships and a single-handed Laser is no expedition ship. Perhaps a Wayfarer or some other larger dinghy would be a reasonable equivalent and they come in wooden versions too.
