Well more of an abbreviated thanks and summary than a full report. I will be expanding for North Pole News.
We had a great time, some people even camped outside the gates overnight to get in for the second day. Well I asked for a campsite near the yacht club and they obliged! The weather cooperated there was a couple of slight showers, but the second day was wonderful and my old tent didn't leak, the fireflies glowed brightly in the bushes.
Our new long distance champions displacing the Dilley family who didn't even try and defend their title were Stephen and Hugh Heaton from Calgary. they came a mere 2500 or so kilometres (or nearly 1600 miles) for a TARS event.
Fanshawe Lake and the Fanshawe Yacht Club were the hosts through the tireless efforts (well actually they were looking a bit frayed by the evening) of Peter and Anne Busby and their children Katherine and Beth. There were plenty of challenging activities ranging from a gold and copper hunt to a scavenger hunt which required the cooperation of native boats and guides to locate cryptic land and seamarks and retrieve chapter headings from the books and decide which book you were trying to identify.
There was lots of food, enough to satisfy a crew of Rogers, Ransomeite and barbecued burgers and chicken, not billygoat and Roger's shark (pickerel).
There was a magnificent Captain Flint flag, white elephant on a green field which nearly brought down the flag pole on the first blustery day!
There was sailing, in a Dart catamaran skippered by the Club Commodore (and Canadian champion), in a trimaran, skippered by a former Commodore and several other boats of different sizes and classes, most of which seemed to be skippered by former Commodores! There was also swimming, rowing and pleasant and quizzical chat around the campfire. Do you know what the most frequently used name in the books is? for how many different characters? Someone had far too much time on their hands!
The only disappointment was that the event was not enjoyed by a few more people. The Busbys did a fantastic job and put on a wonderful couple of days.
