In response, to this long lapsed thread, and the letter that Ransome wrote to J R R Tolkien re. 'men' in The Hobbit:
I have actually seen the original letter that Ransome ("humble hobbit fancier") sent Tolkien in which he made the rather trivial observation that Brogan reports.
It was part of a fascinating exhibition of original Tolkien pictures and papers which the Bodleian library in Oxford ran about three years ago.
This being the case, the letter must be held by and available in the Bodleian.
