In my defence, may I point out that the loons in question frequent a lake with numerous water skiing boats and my approach was made in almost calm winds at about 1 or 2 foot per minute. I wasn't chasing it, just cautiously trying to see its behavior more closely. The loon actually dived because of an appproaching ski boat.
They have often come quite close to people sitting on the shore or swimming quietly in the lake. Last year my daughter and I were watching the parent loons feeding two chicks with small fish while floating about 15 feet away from them.
