Visiting Rusland for the first time last week, I was touched by the tributes that a visitor or visitors had left on Arthur's grave: sea-shells (cockles and a large tropical cowrie of the sort that the Victorians used to love) and, more surprisingly, money (approximately 10p in pennies and halfpennies). It would be interesting to know whether the leavng of money on a grave is a personal invention, or a national custom. Either way, I thought it was a charming gesture in memory of our favourite writer. Can anyone throw any light on this?
