Just to add a kiwi two cents worth - Pelorus Jack guided ships through French Pass in the top of the South Island. It's an extremely dangerous narrow strait of water with two large cliffs of land on either side and swirling currents of water which have been the death of many a mariner and latterly some scuba divers.
