I guess this is all tounge in cheek, but a thought does occur to me about S&A - Susan is thoroughly domesticated from a male perspective, not unusal for the period AR was writing in. On the other hand Titty and Nancy are two of the strongest characters in the book and central to the story, both going against the accepted views of what women/girsl should do at the time it was written.

So... perhaps not such a tounge in cheek question after all!
