I remember The Children Who Lived in a Barn. It fits into my "no adult baddies" category, subcategory "children abandonded by their parents due to circumstances beyond their control". My favourite example of this sub genre being Nan Chauncy's "They Found a Cave" (Have I got the title right OZTars?)
Well actually there were adult baddies in TCWLIAB the wicked woman from the welfare but being one myself, (o.k. a wicked man in my case) I'll skip over that, except to say that I thought leaving kids with 15 year olds was a bit like "you pays your money and you takes your chance" legally. That is to say I didn't think it was actually illegal except that if anything went wrong you might be in trouble. But child care isn't my specialism so I wouldn't act on that advise if I were you.
