I recall a discussion on this board, about two years ago which seemed to conclude that "The Roaring Donkey" was a local name for a pub which does exist but which was actually called "The Red Lion" and had a badly painted inn sign. There is a "Roaring Donkey" in Holland-on-Sea, between Clacton and Frinton, but it was named after the book, as a homage to Ransome, not vice versa!
