A GPS unit can be linked to a mobile phone (on a truck) or to a Satcom C or mini-M unit (on a ship) so that the phone or satcom can be "polled" automatically to give position, course, etc. information. A Satcom C or mini-M unit is just a bit above the yacht level at the moment, but there are people working hard on getting the price down...
