For some reason it recently occurred to me that there may be a reference from WDMTGTS to The Pickwick Papers. You will recollect that Jim Brading's uncle would order "omlette and soup" from Miss Powell of Pin Mill. Mr Pickwick got into "hot soup" for leaving notes with his landlady ordering "chops and tomato soup". Was AR suggesting that there was a Pickwick relation between Brading's uncle and Miss Powell?
