I wrote a lengthy defence of Susan for Mixed Moss (the Arthur Ransome Society Journal) many years ago, and I very much agree with Michael as to her importance in the stories.
(Michael - if you don't have the early Mixed Mosses, and you would like to see the article, let me know - I may still have it on a floppy somewhere.)
