Alan's message provokes waves of nostalgia -- in particular

  1. Travelling on the old Golden Arrow (Flèche d'Or), falling asleep in France and waking up to coffee and croissants as the train sped through the Kent countryside. Magic!

  2. Staying in 1978 at the former Wagon-lits hotel in Hankow (French section of Wuhan) where travellers from Hong Kong to Beijing would in the old days stay overnight before crossing the Yangtse. In 1978 the hotel was more or less as it had been in the 20's, with well-used cuspidors on every landing and remarkable art nouveau light fittings. Arthur Ransome saw dragon-dancing in Hankow and I like to think he stayed in the same hotel.
