It wouldn't have made much, if any difference, even if it were fully operational. By the time the "Anchor Watch" feature could have kicked in, they would already have felt the jolt of the dragging anchor, and John wouldn't have been any more eager to tackle the return in the fog/wind/dark. Radar might have made a difference though.
