Fascinating! There was a press story some years ago about a plot to blow up an underground concrete dam that was supposed to be holding up Levers Water and I wondered at the time why and when the original wooden plug happened to be reinforced with concrete and who and why anyone would want to blow it up.

If anyone wants a mine to explore but prefers solid floors and roofs - there is a nice trial adit just to the side of the waterfall below the Miner's Bridge close by the rock that AR was on when he first met the Collingwoods. Unless you are experienced and have local knowledge it's not a good idea to enter the Coniston mines for the reasons which are self evident from Ian's posting.
