My understanding is that a jibe is a joke played at someone's expense, or a comment intended to deflate someone. A gybe is the altering of the side of a boat on which a mainsail boom is lying, by the means of altering course while running down wind. This is frequently done accidentally, and usually when someone is standing up in the cockpit. The two versions of "halyard" are just that; two alternatives. Tarsus members may be able to tell us if one of them is particularly in current use in the U.S.
