Last night I started reading "Knight on Sailing" (as read by Dick). In addition to the matters that AR directly referred to in the twelve works, it is clear from my reading of this book, that Knight's views on sailing were shared by AR (and may well have influenced AR's). For example, there is a discussion of counters on yachts and small boats which suggests that Knight's views are very similar to Ted Walker's (as reported by John in WDMTGTS - to the effect that they are no good in a seaway). When I read Knight's account of the Falcon in the Baltic, I was struck by the similarity between his observations of Holland and those in WDMTGTS. I suspect that there may be some similar effect in PD arising from Knight's writings on the Carribean (I am still tracking down these books - I suspect that finding a copy of the Marriner's Library version of the Alerte may be interesting because AR wrote the introduction for Hart-Davis). Has anyone else found any other influences of Knight on AR and his works?
