Pilgrims to AR sites in the Lake District might like to visit the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve at Leighton Moss, just over the Cumbrian border in North Lancashire where both Bearded Tits and Bitterns breed, albeit in small numbers. There have been reports of outstandingly good views of Bitterns, forced out of the reeds by ice, standing for long periods in the open. Bearded Tit`s fortunes ebb and flow. A couple of years ago it was estimated there were possibly 300 in the autumn, but numbers seem to have fallen drastically this past year. The Griesdale hide is one of the best spots for both species/
