Sorry, but, as her compostion of the reply telegram in Picts and Martyrs and her formal welcome to the Callums demonstrated, Nancy may be aware of the rules in a theoretical fashion, but her natural bent is not to follow them.

And I can only repeat Ian's question "have you read the books"?
The idea that Nancy would be concerned that "a lapse on her part would have been noted, even by a railway porter" would amaze the doctor, the postman, the boatbuilder, Sammy the Policeman, Young Billy the Charcol Burner all of who are well aware of her "lack of breeding".
