The hierarchy that the Walkers used was, of course, from the merchant marine (Master,Mate, Able Seaman, Boy)which provided both the hierarchy but also more flexibility. Pirates of course were even more flexible and power was perhaps more the result of the relative strength of personalities rather than promotion through the ranks.
