I wonder if the depth of development of a story character is any refelection of the depth of the personality of the real-life role model which AR used. From all that I have read of the Altounyan family, it would appear that they were all very positive personalities; however, within that group it may have been that Mavis [a.k.a Titty] was, in her own quiet, determined way, an outstanding personality. Only those who knew them can answer this. Clearly Taqui was a leader, as eldest children often are, and this is reflected in "John", but Titty's personality is something else again.
I personally felt that all the children in the principal roles were well developed, and there was no need to develop those [such as P&S] whose role is fairly minor.
