Susan has 'depth' but you've got to look for it. Ransome didn't use much text over it, but it's there. I wrote an article for the TARS Journal (MIxed Moss) some years ago on these lines. Susan buried her feelings in her 'duties', e.g after Swallow went down, she went off and lit the fire, and when she blew her whistle it didn't sound as strong as usual - why? full of water? Or because Susan was secretly very upset? Then there's the moment, also in Swallowdale, when she reaches out her hand to Titty in the dark. And what about WD? I could go on. I wish people wouldn't dismiss Susan as a sort of 'drudge'. Read the text!!
